CHESAPEAKE -- Police are investigating the fatal shooting of Virginia State University football recruit Lonnie Andrews Jr. as a homicide.

Chesapeake police spokesman Gus Mojica says officers responding to a report of shots fired at about 2:30 a.m. today found Andrews on a lawn on Lindale Drive. The 18-year-old running back was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Andrews' brother, Antoine Spencer, says the teenager was glad that he was the first member of the family to go to college.

Andrews was a recent graduate of Oscar Smith High School, where he rushed for 1,049 yards and scored 17 touchdowns during the regular season last fall. He ranks third on the school's all-time career rushing list.
