In the modern day, the mom and pop store of yesteryear is making way for the chain stores of the 21st century. Alvey’s Grocery is the latest casualty.
The store has had three locations in the Gainesville area near Catharpin over the years and it has been in existence since 1875. Monday, the Alveys gave up the store for good.
We want to say goodbye to the store. It represents a way of life that is fading.
It used to be that most small businesses were family owned. Individual owners had a strong personal stake in the success of their business and in being a part of the community.
As corporations and chains take over every aspect of the business market, this is becoming less the case. Instead the dollar is the only measuring tool of success and business will do what is good for it,
often not worrying as much about the good of the community.
The last location of Alvey’s Grocery, 4661 Sudley Road, has been bought out by chain store WI-NOT Stop. The chain has 11 stores in Virginia.
So, the business landscape is getting a little more repetitive and a family business is no more.
We wish all the best to the Alveys.
