Good morning Manassas and Manassas Park ...
The Virginia Railway Express/City of Manassas parking deck should be open by the end of the month, said VRE spokesperson Mark Roeber.
Roeber said several minor issues have held up the opening of the five-level, 432-space garage located on Prince William Street in Old Town Manassas.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the garage was June 26.
The Manassas School Board is meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at its central office.
The board will discuss, among other items, the new Baldwin Elementary School and paying for higher than expected fuel costs. The board approved the Baldwin site in June — on the same parcel as the current school. On Tuesday, the board will hear more details on the site from architect VMDO.
The board has a $135,000 budget shortfall for transportation costs thanks to the dramatic rise in the price of fuel. Because of this, strategies will be discussed including reducing idling time for buses, a limit of 5 miles on field trips and combining sports teams on one bus for athletic events when possible.
The Manassas City Council will have a special meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room.
The council will discuss the budget process as well as the city’s public safety facility needs. With the recent creation of the career fire and rescue department and the police’s on-going request for a new training facility, the city is looking to determine a long-term, comprehensive course of action.
Space is needed soon for the new fire and rescue chief and administrative staff. The chief position will likely be filled by the fall.
