Officials temporarily evacuated Baldwin Elementary School after smoke was reported in a kindergarten classroom 10:05 a.m. today, said school spokeswoman Almeta Radford.
After arriving at the scene, firefighters found no fire and later determined that sewer lines were being smoke-tested for leaks, breaks and defects. Some of the smoke backed up into a trap that didn’t have enough water in it to keep it in the pipes and out of the classroom, Radford said.
Pupils were kept in the shade at the school and plans were made to take them to Osbourn High School if necessary, but officials found that there was no danger and allowed people back into the building at 10:35 a.m., Radford said.
Parents were notified through the school’s parent alert system, Radford said.
