In his June 12 letter, Scott Barley claims he will be voting Republican for the first time this year. He considers Barack Obama a “huge threat to our nation” because Obama never served in the military. He
is disturbed because Obama “feels he can show his patriotism through his actions,” rather than by wearing an American flag on his lapel.
As a fifty year veteran of the Republican party who has watched it degenerate into a mindless blob incapable of rational thought, I welcome Mr. Barley to the fold; he will fit in well.
It is precisely this kind of simplistic thinking that prompted our Republican congressman, Tom Davis, to declare recently, “If the Republican brand were dogfood, they would take it off the shelf.”
Barack Obama was in elementary school during the Vietnam war, and we have had a volunteer military ever since. Are those millions of Americans who chose not to serve a huge threat to out nation?
Dick Cheney was of draft age and dodged service with five college deferments because, in his own words, “I had other priorities.”
Now Cheney is never seen in public without an American flag prominently displayed on his lapel.
If Republicans truely wanted to show respect for our flag, they would concern themselves more with the way the Bush administration has run roughshod over our Constitution, and less with flaunting a pin
any idiot can buy.
