The Manassas City Council approved a pair of special use permits for businesses located on Wellington Road Monday night.
Colgan Powersports, 9409 and 9411 Wellington Road, and Whitts Harley Davidson, 9321 Wellington Road got the approvals. Colgan was seeking a permit to sell and repair motorcycles and other motorsport vehicles, while Whitts wanted permission for the sale and repair of motorcycles, as well as associated outdoor events.
Whitts had been hosting these events as marketing tools for a number of years without knowing that they needed a permit to do so, said city senior planner Gregory Bokan. Because no one complained about the events in the past, the city was unaware of the events until recently, Bokan said.
After a public hearing on both permit issuances on June 16 when no one spoke against the applications, council approved the permits unanimously Monday.
• The council also approved the street name Market Circle for the future Hastings Marketplace development off Wellington Road.
Market Circle will be the road that goes around Harris Teeter grocery store, which will serve as the anchor tenant of the commercial end of the project.
The residential site plan has not been approved yet, said Community Development Director Elizabeth Via, so there is no rush on naming the adjacent roads.
Councilman Marc Aveni said he would prefer the city not adopt the nine other developer-suggested street names and that the Land Use Committee seek out more appropriate, potentially historical names that would fit the city.
The council concurred with his suggestion. The developer-suggested names were as follows: Benfield Drive, Benfield Mews, Leander Drive, Leander Mews, Fendall Street, Fendall Mews, Wheatland Mews, Varney Mews and Otterburn Mews.
The residential site plan will likely be presented to council for approval by next month while the Harris Teeter is likely to be open by the middle of next year, Via said.
