… The Prince William Clean Community Council — an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc. — which will present the top three shopping centers in the county with the 2008 Clean Shopping Center Award at its 2008 annual Community Appreciation Cookout at Lake Ridge Park, 12340 Cotton Mille Drive, Lake Ridge, on Saturday. The council signed up 70 shopping centers to participate in the program whereby volunteers anonymously survey as assigned center four times a year and report the results to the council after each survey. Based on the results each shopping center is given a score and the centers with the highest averages receive the award. The event is free to all and will start at 11:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.
… Alexandra Ramona White of Haymarket, who won her age bracket (12 to 13) with a 36-hole of 145 in the 2008 Trusted Choice/Optimist Junior Classic golf tournament at Glen Allen. She is now scheduled to compete for the Optimist International representing Virginia starting July 24.
… Contours Express of Manassas, which is hosting a CPR class for the general public on July 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. The cost is $50 per person and the class is limited to 20 people. The class will be taught by Charlie Patullo of Safetynet Management Company who specializes in first-aid/CPR training. To register, call 703-257-6444 at least two days in advance.
… Host families who have signed up to take in French exchange students for the three-week summer stay. It’s a great cultural experience for the entire family. Host families are compensated $80 per week to host. These students are part of an Advanced Tutoring Program and have to attend classes and group activities throughout the week.
Losers
… Motorists who are not making proper use of car seats for children. Despite the laws and warnings, car crashes are still the single largest cause of death among children under the age of 14. It is estimated that half of he 1,500 fatalities each year could be prevented with the proper use of a child car seat.
