VOICES UNITED CONCERT MARCH 8

The Voices United Choir, the Manassas Community Chorale and the Stonewall Jackson High School Concert Choir will present the Voices United 2008 Concert on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Stonewall Jackson High School. Mark Hayes, a nationally known composer and arranger, will lead the choir; the Chorale will be directed by Becky Verner and the Stonewall Concert Choir will be directed by Wandalyn Boley. Jonathan Laird and LeeAnn Renfro will accompany the groups.

One hundred and fifty-two local musicians from 28 churches and six choral groups will form the Voices United choir. They will sing a variety of choir anthems, including "You Are the Light of the World," "And the Father Will Dance," "Grace" and "This Little Light of Mine," all written or arranged by Mark Hayes. The Chorale, Concert Choir and combined Ensembles will perform nine selections by the clinician, including "Rejoice and Sing Out His Praises," "Credo," "Steady My Trembulin' Soul" and "Shut de Do." The concert will conclude with a combined anthem, "America, the Beautiful," also arranged by the guest conductor. Ten guest instrumentalists will be featured on several of the concert selections.

Mark Hayes' vocal and instrumental writing is widely acclaimed and performed across the nation. His unique choral settings draw from such diverse styles such as gospel, jazz, pop, folk, and classical to achieve a truly "American sound." His works are regularly featured at annual conventions of music educators, and his personal catalog, compiled over the last 30 years, includes well over 600 published original compositions and arrangements, which are distributed by several leading publishers. Hayes has produced and arranged over 50 recordings for various artists and publishers, 25 keyboard folios, and seven volumes of vocal solos.

Hayes often incorporates a piano concert featuring his own arrangements into a weekend choir clinic. His warm, sensitive style at the keyboard makes him an instant favorite among all age groups. He will present a piano concert at Manassas Baptist Church on Sunday, March 9 at 7:30 PM in the church sanctuary. The concert is free, but an offering will be received.

Tickets for the Voices United concert at SJHS are $10 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased at the Manassas Music and Arts Center (checks only), at Manassas Baptist Church (sanctuary building) or at the door.
