Gary Jacobsen’s article regarding attendance at community colleges vs. four-year universities had a good point: He highlighted the educational quality of Northern Virginia Community College. As a former employee of that institution, I can attest to the dedication and scholarship of my former colleagues.
Mr. Jacobsen, however, made an error that is common among both students and their parents. The cost of meals and lodging at an out-of-town university is not an expense of higher education since these monies would have to be shelled out in order to live anywhere, anytime.
Thus food and rent are a cost of living and not a cost to be included in non-commuter school expenses. Only food and lodging costs at universities above those that are encumbered elsewhere are a cost of a higher education.
