First United Presbyterian Church's yard looked like a field of shoe flowers this week.
Shoes -- 1,208 of them -- were placed atop wooden stakes and planted firmly in the Dale City churchyard as a visual reminder of the number of children who die of hunger every hour.
The shoes were part of "Be Seen, Be Hungry, Be Heard," an international student movement and 30-hour fast Feb. 22 and 23. Four Prince William County-area churches and 140 teens raised more than $4,100 for World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization that feeds hungry families in about 100 countries.
World Vision's 30 Hour Famine has raised more than $100 million since 1992.
The Prince William teens -- from First United Presbyterian Church, Covenant Presbyterian, Bethel United Methodist and Good Shepherd United Methodist -- only consumed liquids during the 30-hour "famine.
"The students also took part in community service projects, including collecting and stocking food for area pantries, playing games at the homes of senior citizens and working with Project Mend-A-House, a non-profit that helps low-income Prince William County residents in need of minor home repairs.
First United Presbyterian Church, 14391 Minnieville Road, Woodbridge, is still accepting donations for its 30 Hour Famine project. For more information call 703-670-7834.
