I moved to Northern Virginia nearly 20 years ago. Prince William County then was beautiful. It appeared green and clean and although it seemed to lack major road systems, was a great place to live. Then came progress. New homes, new roads, shopping, shopping, shopping, and with it came trash, trash, trash.
It appears that when building roads, shopping centers and sub-divisions, someone failed to count the cost of maintaining them after they were built or improved. And so 20 years later, the great architectural design emphasizing esthetics in construction and landscape are littered with plastic bags, beer cans and bottles, fast food packaging and even discarded furniture, fixtures, tires and every other kind of trash conceivable. Intersections have what appears to be months of debris and cigarette butts. Access roads from Interstate 95 into Woodbridge, Lake Ridge Dale City and Dumfries, at times, look as if the landfill has moved east.
What happened to the litter laws, street sweepers and signage reminding people that there is a relationship between cleanliness, quality of life, and oh yes, resale values of property too? I believe it is time for our county government to seriously review and address this issue before it becomes even worse.
Hopefully, in their review, they will appropriate some of the 25 percent increase in tax rates being proposed by our county administrator to something more important than attempting to carry out the federal government’s responsibility of enforcing immigration law. Let’s get serious about making Prince William County a clean, safe place that looks like the community outlined in county brochures for everyone who chooses to live here.
It is time to clean-up the county and make it look like the seventh wealthiest county in the nation!
