We pay taxes because when we share responsibility and pool our money together, we can afford things that we can’t pay for individually. The residents of our county pay for our schools, police, firefighters, EMS, roads, parks, libraries and more. These are good things — and I want them in my community.
I don’t agree with all the ways that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors decides to spend our money, but it’s a community decision, and none of us would agree all the time. My husband and I don’t always agree with how we should spend our money, and we’re only two people.
Taxes aren’t evil.
The government is not stealing our money. I am proud that I pay my portion of funds that make our community a good place to live. We can, and should, expect our local government to use our money as efficiently as possible.
But there is a fine line between efficient and just plain cheap. I am willing to pay more money, sometimes, for more services.
The draft budget for the coming fiscal year was just presented to the Board of Supervisors.
You can look at it on-line or at the library. Tell your supervisor what your priorities are for our money.
