Earlier this week Gov. Timothy M. Kaine signed a law that keeps hybrids in HOV lanes for another year.
The sunset date for the hybrid vehicle extension is now July 1, 2009.
This exemption applies to all hybrid vehicles with clean special fuel license plates driving on Interstate 66 and those registered before July 1, 2006, on Interstates 395 and 95.
Kaine signed the bill, HB 1014, into law on Monday, said press secretary Gordon Hickey.
The number of hybrid vehicles allowed to drive on HOV lanes on I-95 and I-395 are capped.
The fines for breaking HOV laws have not changed. The penalties range from $125 for the first offense to $1,000 for the fourth offense. Most weekday HOV restrictions begin at 6:30 a.m. The I-66 HOV restrictions begin at 5:30 a.m. at Va. 234 outside the Beltway.
HOV restrictions are lifted on federal holidays.
