The Potomac News, Manassas Journal Messenger and the Stafford County Sun took several awards in the 2007 Virginia Press Association contest for writing, photography, art work and news presentation.
Held at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, the banquet played host to daily and weekly newspapers alike from across the state. According to coordinator Randy Jessee, the contest received 4,704 entries from 147 publica-tions. There were 825 winners from 114 publications. The remaining publications did not score.
The contest was judged by the New Jersey Press Association in Trenton.
Potomac News
The paper competed against newspapers within the daily group with 20,000 to 49,000 circulation.
Sports writer Joe Conroy, and photographers Jason Hornick and Donnie Biggs received third place for combination picture and story.
Amanda Stewart placed first in education writing.
Sports editor David Fawcett took first place in sports column writing.
Former photographer Dylan Moore placed first in general news photo.
Former sports writer Matt Stanmyre placed second in feature writing portfolio.
Elisa Glushefski took third place in government and public safety writing.
Feature writer Josh Eiserike placed third in critical writing and third in column writing.
Sports writer Brian Hunsicker placed third in sports column writing.
The sports staff placed third for design of sports pages.
Manassas Journal Messenger
The Journal Messenger competed in a group of daily papers with circulations up to 19,999.
Vincent Paterno, Eden Miller, Nick Otto and Todd Usher took second place for front page design.
The grandmother/granddaughter team of Mary Scites and Courtney Scites placed second in business, financial or agricultural pages for their work on the business pages.
The editing and design staff placed third in general makeup.
Stafford County Sun
The weekly Sun competed in the group with circulations in excess of 14,000.
The paper won first place for its editorial pages. The award went to managing editor Tracy Bell, columnists Alane Callander and David Kerr and former managing editor Andrea Russell.
In the general makeup category, the Sun took home second place for its entries. Managing editor Tracy Bell, re-porter Jennifer Buske, former managing editor Andrea Russell and former community editor KJ Mushung took home the award.
Photographer Jason Hornick also won a second-place prize for his photo of a cyclist.
Sun columnist David Kerr won third place for column writing, specifically on articles about "Life on the Front Porch," squirrels and Pearl Harbor.
Potomac News features editor Katie Dolac won several awards for the Culpeper Star-Exponent. She placed first in feature series or continuing story, second in general news photo and third in personality or portrait photo, feature writing portfolio and general news writing.
Dolac and Web content coordinator Maggie Ramsay placed first in multimedia feature reporting.
The Potomac News, Manassas Journal Messenger and the Stafford County Sun are owned by Media General.
The Culpeper paper is also owned by Media General and competes in the below 19,999 circulation category.
