WOODBRIDGE — One 22-year-old woman was flown to an area hospital after a five car accident at Old Bridge Road and Rolling Brook Drive on Thursday morning.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded starting at 6:55 a.m.

"I can see Old Bridge Road from my office cars would sit for 15 to 20 minutes without moving," said Old Bridge Elementary School principal Anita Flemons.

They were missing 400 students and most of their teachers at the time school was supposed to start.

Hundreds of students were late to various schools and even more commuters were stuck on Old Bridge after the accident.

Police shut down Old Bridge Road to allow a helicopter to airlift the 22-year-old woman, according to witness accounts.

Traffic more than two miles of road was stopped, leaving drivers to maneuver their vehicles on shoulders and grassy areas to detour the standstill.
