The Wegmans Food Markets at Potomac Center in eastern Prince William County will open on June 8, corporate officials announced Thursday.
“We only open about two new stores a year, so for us it’s a really big deal,” said Jo Natale, director of media relations for Wegmans. “There is a lot of time and effort put in to preparing for an opening.”
More than 3,000 area residents have applied to work at the new 140,000-square-foot upscale grocery store between Opitz and Dale boulevards near Interstate 95.
The Potomac Center store has already hired 300 people and plans to hire another 300, said store manager Sharon Briandi.
The Woodbridge store plans on spending about $2 million in pre-opening payroll to train the new employees, said Kevin Stickles, district manager for Virginia and Maryland stores.
The Potomac Center Wegmans will be the New York-based grocery chain’s 71st store. The other Wegmans are located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland as well as two in Virginia. They are in Sterling and Fairfax County.
