The 17-year-old Gar-Field Senior High School student who was stabbed several times in a parking lot after a basketball charity event is in stable condition, police said on Saturday.
Another 17-year-old boy is in custody at the Prince William Juvenile Detention Center on an aggravated malicious wounding charge in connection with the Friday night stabbing.
The juvenile, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was arrested just hours after the incident, which occurred about 9:30 p.m. when hundreds of youths left the high school in Woodbridge. They were attending Hoops Fest XIII, an annual fundraiser organized by the Potomac News & Manassas Journal Messenger.
Police are still looking for other suspects involved in the incident.
The fight could have been gang-related, but police aren't sure, said Officer Erika Hernandez, police spokeswoman.
Those involved with the stabbing were removed by police just after Hoops Fest ended.
Later, as crowds left the school gym, a few unrelated fights erupted and the high school parking lot became a scene full of police, flashing lights and ambulances.
The stabbing victim, a senior at Gar-Field, was flown from Potomac Hospital to another area hospital to receive further care for his injuries, police said.
An officer and a number of spectators also received minor injuries that night.
Police are offering up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about the event call their Crime Solvers tip line at 703-670-3700 or 1-866-411-TIPS.
