Prtc buses advertise a shortage of manpower with the Dale City volunteer firefighters.
If you're a bus rider in Prince William County, there's a good chance you've seen or ridden in the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department's advertisement on wheels.
One of the Potomac-Rappahannock Transit Center commuter buses resembles a fire engine more than a bus these days.
The bus "wrap" was done to recruit more volunteers, said assistant fire chief Steve Chappell. While the department is meeting at least minimum staffing standards, Chappell said added firefighters and medics are always welcome.
The bus displays three firefighters next to a blank silhouette with the words "Picture Yourself Here, Volun-teers Needed!"
Chappell said the department has been contacted by different fire stations all over the nation inquiring about the wrap. The bus -- which is designed to look like the department's No. 13 station ladder tower -- was first wrapped in mid-October and will stay on for four months.
"This the first time that we have undertaken an activity like this and we're excited about it," Chappell said.
According to PRTC spokesperson Christine Rodrigo, the fire department is the first community organization to do a project like this. In the past, the Virginia Lottery and Paramount Kings Dominion have paid to have their buses wrapped.
The Dale City Volunteer Fire Department has approximately 200 volunteers spread over four stations. The majority of the department's basic needs such as staffing and equipment are paid out of the Prince William County budget.
However, Chappell said the department holds fundraisers for various other items to support the primary budget.
