A man who police say was involved in the abduction and death of an Alexandria woman in a car crash last month now faces a felony murder charge.
Keith Anthony Baskerville, 19, of Dale City, was the sole survivor of the Sept. 13 wreck that killed abduction victim Barbara Jean Bosworth, 61, of Alexandria.
Baskerville’s alleged accomplice in the abduction and the driver of the car, Lutchman Lawrence Chandler, 19, also of Dale City, later died in the hospital.
Police held a midday news conference Tuesday to announce the murder charge, which was handed down directly by the grand jury.
Baskerville last month was charged with carjacking and abduction with the intent to extort money. He remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.
Prince William Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said the charges could bring with them three consecutive life sentences.
“This is an unusual case, this is a very tragic case and fortunately it doesn’t happen very often,” said Ebert.
The case will be tried in Prince William County Circuit Court. A preliminary hearing on the abduction and carjacking charges will be heard in General District Court.
Police allege the two men abducted Bosworth using a fake gun while she was shopping at Springfield Mall in Fairfax County.
From there, they drove her to a Montclair convenience store and forced her to make purchases with her ATM card.
Customers in the store suspected something was amiss. One pretended to know Bosworth and gave her a hug, asking if she needed help. She said she did. Bosworth was also able to call her husband during the ordeal, calling him by a different name so that he knew something was wrong.
Police were alerted and an officer pursued Bosworth’s car down Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge to the intersection of U.S. 1 when it crashed. Bosworth was ejected and died instantly.
