On Friday September 19, 2008, USA Birthright was presented The Presidents Volunteer Service Award in Washington, DC. The award was presented by the Presidents Council on Civic Participation to honor all Birthright volunteers across the USA. Birthright, an emergency pregnancy service, assists women facing an unplanned pregnancy. The groups motto states, It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right every child to be born.
An accompanying letter, signed by President Bush states (in part): Congratulations on receiving the Presidents Volunteer Service Award . . . Through service to others, you demonstrate the outstanding character of America and help strengthen our country. I congratulate you and all Americans who have answered this call . . .
Birthright of Atlanta was the first center opened in the USA in 1969 and continues to flourish. The national headquarters is based in Atlanta, along with the 24/7 crisis line (1-800-550-4900). Birthright International is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where the organization was founded by Louise Summerhill, and is celebrating its 40TH anniversary in October.
Birthright has maintained an office in Manassas (703-361-9769) for more than 30 years. Here volunteers offer caring, nonjudgmental support to any woman. The services, which include pregnancy testing, are free and totally confidential. Often a woman comes to the office confiding the pressure she is receiving from friends, family and/or the father of the baby. Many have not even considered what they, themselves want to do. By listening with empathy and encouragement, Birthright volunteers provide positive and loving support. Practical, material support, and referrals to community agencies help to alleviate the fears and concerns which make her feel hopeless. This is a concerted effort among the volunteers, the local agencies, and the individual donors who make the office possible. The Manassas office is open Monday 9:30-3:30, Tuesday-Friday 9:30-12: 30 and Thursday 7-8:30PM.
