A sinkhole slowed traffic on U.S. 1 in Woodbridge on Saturday.

A split water main caused the hole to form around 8 a.m., leaving a gas station in the area without water.

The shallow hole was about 3 feet long by 1 foot wide, Keenan Howell, Prince William County Service Authority spokesman said.

The hole formed in the right lane of the road, between the Gordon Boulevard and Occoquan Road.

Traffic was reduced to only two lanes - one southbound and one northbound.

The water main was fully repaired after 2 p.m. and crews expect to have the hole repaired by this evening.

On Monday or Tuesday construction crews are expected to lay a permanent patch over the repaired sinkhole, between morning and afternoon rush hours, said Howell.

The right southbound lane of U.S. 1 is expected to be closed during those repairs.
