Dear Lane Ranger:
I often wonder why there is a bridge sitting in the middle of the road that's not being used. It sits on Interstate 95, just after the HOV-lane merge in Dumfries. Are the HOV lanes going to be extended? Why did they build a bridge if no one is gong to use it?

Dear Mark,
That bridge was built as part of a separate construction project on the highway back in 2001, said Virginia Depart-ment of spokesman Mike Salmon.
They decided to build the bridge there so it could be later used in the event the HOV lanes were extended, or if the proposed High Occupancy Toll lanes are approved, said Salmon.
Salmon said it was a better use of taxpayer money to build the bridge and have it, than to have built it only to tear it down after the initial construction project was over.
