A Dumfries man who used false identities to apply for credit cards and bank accounts was recently sentenced to serve two years in federal prison.
Arshad Hussain, 49, formerly of the 4300 block of Palton Drive in Dumfries, was sentenced at U.S. District Court in Alexandria on Friday.
Federal prosecutors said that Hussain was one of seven men involved in the identity theft and credit card fraud scheme which netted more than $5 million in about two years.
Hussain, who prosecutors said fled to Pakistan before returning to the United States to face the fraud charges, was the last of the conspirators to be sentenced.
The others, including a 29-year-old Woodbridge man, Bilal Saleem, were sentenced in 2007 and 2008.
According to prosecutors and court documents, the seven men used at least 35 false identities to open about 200 credit card accounts and about 60 bank accounts between February 2005 and May 2007.
The men used the false identities, representing people or businesses, to make large purchases and obtain large cash advances, much of which they sent to accounts in Pakistan, prosecutors said.
All seven men were born in Pakistan, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, the men were required to forfeit a total of $5 million and to pay more than $3 million to the victims, which included several banks and financial lending companies.
The following men were previously sentenced for the fraud scheme:
- Abdul Hameed, 47, of Houston, sentenced July 25, 2008, to 17 years, eight months in prison
