A Gainesville man was killed early Saturday in a high-speed motorcycle crash on Interstate 495 near the Springfield interchange.
Christopher M. Ford, 21, of the 4500 block of Old Field Drive, died in the wreck, said state police spokeswoman Deborah Cox.
State police dispatchers began receiving calls just before 3 a.m. of two motorcycles traveling together at high speeds in the southbound lanes.
One witness told police that one of the motorcyclists passed a dump truck, but the second slammed into the truck. That cyclist was then hit by a 2005 Honda Civic and died at the scene, Cox said.
No one else was injured.
The first motorcyclist, Wendell Howard Jr., 23, of Manassas, was charged with reckless driving and failure to have a valid motorcycle endorsement, Cox said.
Troopers are still trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The wreck closed the southbound lanes of I-495 until 9:05 a.m.
