With construction on the new replacement building for Triangle Elementary School continuing on schedule, the Prince William County Public Schools Office of Facilities Services is projecting the move-in date for students and staff to be during the 2009 winter break.

The roof is complete on 80 percent of the building and contractors working on mechanical, plumb-ing and electrical work are very busy installing piping and wire inside the building.

Road work on the right-of-way at Lionsfield Road and the school entrance is on schedule and should be complete prior to the opening of school in September.

In preparation for the school opening, Triangle Elementary School staff and Office of Facilities Services personnel are working out details for the transition to the new school.

Once the transition is completed, the contractor will begin the demolition of the existing Triangle Elementary School and construction of the new parking lot, bus loop, student drop-off area and play areas. This work is scheduled to be completed in fall 2010.

Triangle Elementary School sits on a little more than 18 acres in a park-like setting still consid-ered to be off the beaten path. Despite a renovation in 1992, the student population has grown far beyond the capacity of 438. It now houses 515 youngsters. The school opened in 1959.

Nine "learning cottages" stand close together in the woods behind the school, having served as temporary classrooms for many years.

About a year ago, both the history and future of Triangle Elementary School changed with the pitch of a shovel as elected officials, school officials, Triangle administrators, teachers, students, and families ceremoniously began construction of a replacement school.

Students who sang at the beginning of the ceremony joined in with their shovels to help officials break ground.

"This is the best thing that could happen to us," said Triangle Principal Mark Marino-ble, during the ceremony. "We all love our school now, but we very much look forward to the new building."
