Cloudy skies and impending rain didn't stop volunteers from showing up to help clean up the new Silver Lake Park near Haymarket Saturday.
About 45 volunteers showed up Saturday for a workday and cleanup sponsored by the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition and the Nokesville Horse Society, said horse society president Scott Helberg.
Volunteers from the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition, Nokesville Horse Society and Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts and other area residents pitched in to help with the cleanup, Helberg said.
The volunteers helped to blaze three new trails, trim back an existing overgrown tail and remove old barbed wire and chain link fences at the park, he said.
The groups plan to hold another cleanup and workday Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Helberg said they hope to finish cleanup and fence removal at the park Saturday.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors voted in June to give control of the 230-acre park, on Antioch Road near Haymarket, to the Prince William Park Authority.
The Park Authority plans to open the park for "passive recreation,"including access to the trails and lake, on Oct. 1.
The county has owned the Silver Lake property since December 2006, when Toll Brothers, a developer that built the nearby Dominion Valley subdivision, proffered it to the county, but it has not yet been opened to the public.
Park Authority officials said community meetings will be held to determine what other structures and facilities could come to the park in the future. The first public meeting on the park's master plan is scheduled for Oct. 6 at Mountain View Elementary School.
