STERLING, Va., – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a Falls Church, Va., resident Monday on Nevada fraud and insufficient funds charges as the man attempted to board a flight to London at Washington Dulles International Airport.
CBP officers identified and detained Michael J. McPherson, 61, at about 8:40 p.m. Monday in the gate area for a British Airways flight. After confirming his identity, officers contacted Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police who confirmed the Clark County, Nevada warrant and took McPherson into custody.
An earlier flight cancellation allowed CBP officers time to hit on McPherson’s arrest warrant. CBP officers typically make fugitive arrests on arriving international flights because they have the time to thoroughly clear the passenger manifest.
“Capturing a wanted fugitive on a departing international flight is unique for us. It is also a great example of how technology, officer initiative and interagency cooperation contributed to Mr. McPherson’s capture,” said Christopher Hess, CBP Port Director for the Port of Washington.
CBP officers routinely run international flight passenger manifests through various law enforcement databases and return wanted fugitives to justice. During 2008, CBP officers at the Port of Washington arrested 111 travelers on outstanding arrest warrants or for violations of U.S. laws.
MWAA police took McPherson, who was traveling alone, to the Loudon County detention center to await extradition to Nevada.
