This month there are several exciting events planned for your enjoyment so pick the ones you are interested in and be sure to sign up in advance. If there is a fee involved, remember you have to pay to have your reservation recorded.
Meetings
- A town hall meeting will be held Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. with Supervisor Frank J. Principi. Representatives from the Agency on Aging, Omnilink, taxi companies and local churches will discuss transportation options currently available to older adults living in the county, as well as future plans. Please RSVP at the reception desk or by calling 703-792-5081. Light refreshments will be served.
- Our next Friends meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
- The next town meeting will be Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m.
These meetings are a time to discuss with center members all issues brought up and decisions agreed upon during the Friends meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. The town meeting is also a time to discuss new program ideas and review all center suggestions. Please join us to see what’s happening and lend you voice.
Acting classes
Acting classes for seniors are offered as part of a six-week program open to all Prince William County seniors at the Manassas center. Beginning Sept. 15, the group will meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. to have fun learning theater vocabulary, staging, improvisation and performances.
The program will be headed by adjunct professor Meg Kelly VanLent of Towson University. Classes will be one and a half hours each. Please call the Manassas Senior Center if you are interested at 703-792-6405. There is no fee.
Open house
An open house at the Senior Center featuring “Boogie Woogie Man” Daryl Davis is planned Sept. 21.
The Friends of the Senior Center at Woodbridge extend an invitation to all those 55 and older to visit the senior center for an open house to celebrate National Senior Center Month. If you have friends who have never been here, invite them to join you for the event.
Enjoy the free coffee and light refreshments and show folks around. All are welcome to try the various scheduled activities throughout the day. All new people are welcome to try their luck at bingo compliments of the Friends.
As a very special treat to salute National Senior Center Month, we are pleased to announce that following the lunch, we will have a spectacular performance by Daryl Davis.
This event will fill up fast and space is limited so be sure to sign up early. Entertainment is at 1:30 p.m.
Elvis is in the house
“Memories of Elvis” will be Sept. 23 at 12:30 p.m. Come rock’n roll with Elvis, aka Michael Hoover. If you really want to get into the mood, you can come dressed in white T-shirts or poodle skirts and peddle pushers.
Listen to the music and just have some fun before the summer is over. A $2 donation will cover the cost of your reservation. Lunch will be served immediately beforehand, and we ask you to make your regular donation for the lunch. Invite someone who’s never been. This will be a fun afternoon.
