The congregation of Harvest Life Changers Church, International donated over 100 supply-filled backpacks to area students through the Prince William County Foster Care Program and the church's outreach services program last Wednesday.
With special assistance from Staples in Alexandria, the congregation donated backpacks and school supplies throughout the month of August to support the children of the surrounding communities. The backpacks contained pencils, scissors, glue, loose-leaf paper, erasers, folders, crayons, composition books, crayon boxes, hand sanitizer, markers, hi-lighters, tissues, binders and more.
"The donated items are an expression of the love and compassion that we as a congregation feel for our community's children," said Bishop Lyle Dukes, Senior Pastor. "We are doing our best to ensure that our community takes care of our most precious commodity -- our children."
The Prince William County Foster Care is a service provided to children who are brought into the custody of the Department of Social Services when their family or prior custodian is unable or unwilling to provide appropriate care for them. Foster parents provide substitute temporary care for the children; and they work as a team with the department staff and with the parents to plan for the children.
"We truly do not want to see any child left behind because of the lack of school supplies," Pastor Deb-orah Dukes said. "This is our effort to help the children of this community and surrounding communities be successful," she added.
The church also plans to continue this effort through the first week of school and throughout September, if neces-sary.
The Harvest Life Changers Church family would like to thank Staples for assisting in our efforts by supplying fifty backpacks this year to such a worthy cause.
