Ronald (RJ) and Mary Ellen Burns (Borst) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 29, 2009. The couple met while attending Portland High School in Portland, Maine. The phrase “stampede” has a special and happy meaning for them. They were married on Aug. 29, 1959, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception soon after graduating.
RJ began his career in the U.S. Navy, being named Sailor of the Year in 1971. While in the U.S. Navy they relocated many times in the United States and Bermuda while raising two children, Ron and Karen.
Retiring from the U.S. Navy after 20 years, both RJ and Mary began new careers with the CIA that allowed them to travel and live extensively throughout the world, eventually working, living or visiting every continent in the world except Antarctica. They survived many exciting adventures, the Consulate attack in Pakistan and the fall of the Berlin Wall, to name a few. They both retired from the CIA after an additional 20 years of stellar service to their country.
It is the sincere wish of their children, Ronald J. Burns Jr., and Karen Burns Alewine as well as their son-in-law, John Alewine; granddaughters, Meghan, Caitlin and Sierra; and grandson, Daniel that they know how deeply they are appreciated, loved and cherished.
The love of the “White Knight” and Mary that was discovered 50 years ago, nurtured over pilgrimages to DiPietro’s Italian sandwiches and many family road trips, is an inspiration to us on the importance of trust, love and family.
