Two adults and eight children are homeless after a fire ripped through their Woodbridge home Tuesday.
A jogger running past the home at 14995 Alaska Road saw fire and smoke coming from the roof and alerted the residents, Prince William Fire and Rescue Department spokeswoman Kim Hylander said.
Fire and rescue crews arrived at 9:48 a.m., evacuated the two adults and the children from the home, and then put out the fire before it could cause additional damage to the home, Hylander said.
Investigators said the fire started inside a wall and was caused by electrical wiring.
The home sustained at least $25,000 damage, according to a county Fire Marshal spokesman.
The home did have two older model smoke detectors. However, neither was working, Hylander said.
Fire officials urge residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they change their clocks, during the bi-annual time changes in the spring and fall.
Fire officials also suggest installing smoke detectors on each level of the home, including the basement, and to test them on a monthly basis. A smoke detector should be replaced every 10 years, Hylander said.
