Rescue crews called to multiple water rescues Wednesday

A driver who thought they could cross a flooded road Wednesday morning had to be rescued from his car. It was one of three swift water rescues performed in the area after heavy rain moved through.

Prince William fire and rescue crews were called to the Bristow area about 9:45 a.m. for a report of the driver stuck in water and trapped inside of their car.

When crews arrived they found a pickup stranded in approximately 14 inches of water on Valley View Drive, said Prince William Fire and Rescue Department spokeswoman Kim Hylander.

“Swift Water Rescue units assisted the occupants in safely exiting the vehicle and moving to higher ground,” Hylander stated in a press release.

The driver attempted to cross the road despite signs posted earlier warning drivers and pedestrians about high water, said Hylander.

Rain moved into the region late Tuesday night, and by midday Wednesday, most of the Washington region had collected between one and a half inches to two inches of rain in less than 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service.

Hylander urged residents to turn around when they see high water, and never attempt to cross flowing streams or drive thorough flooded roadways.

“If your vehicle stalls get out and move to higher ground. If walking in water that’s above your ankles stop and turn around,” said Hylander.

Residents are also urged to avoid underpasses, underground parking garages, and basement after heavy rains.
