The Potomac Nationals are our baseball team. We had better claw, grapple and throw elbows in an effort to keep them here in Prince William County.
The P-Nats currently play at Pfitzner Stadium, but the team seeks better accommodations going forward.
Towards that end, the county has looked at possible areas in which to build a stadium, but especially in an economic time when they need to scrimp and save, the Board of County Supervisors is against the idea of spending taxpayer dollars on such a project .
Rightfully so. We agree that the county must find a way besides reaching into our pockets. But now that the P-Nats are possibly looking to Loudoun County to give them the facility they deserve, it is time for county leaders to really put some thought into an out-of-box solution.
We don't know what it takes. Perhaps the county needs to spend some serious time seeking financial backers. Perhaps it just has to beg P-Nats owner Art Silber not to go. Whatever it takes, supervisors, you need to do it.
The Potomac Nationals have been here since 1984. They are an institution in Prince William County and have become one of the things that defines us. To lose them would be to lose a piece of ourselves.
Write your supervisors and demand favorable resolution. Write Silber and tell him what the team means to you. And most importantly, when the opportunity arises, go see the P-Nats. Support them the best way you can: with your presence and cash.
