Seniors Manassas: Blizzard reminds native New Yorker of home

Being a native of Tonawanda, N.Y., (a suburb of Buffalo) I should be used to the weather we’ve had this week. However, though it brought back fond memories of toboggan sledding at Orchard Park, it also brought back memories of shoveling my way out of the driveway each morning and shoveling myself back in the evening after the snow plows had done their work.

When I attempted to get to my car on Sunday morning and stepped into snow well above my knees I also remembered why I “came south”! With the help of neighbors, I finally got out of our parking lot on Monday afternoon. It was beautiful, though, and I did get some lovely photos to e-mail to my New York friends. While it will be nice to have a white Christmas, I sincerely hope we don’t have a white New Year.

Dance groups perform

Both the center’s two dance groups had a very busy week. The Step Sisters entertained at the center’s Christmas Luncheon at noon Thursday to a very lively and appreciative audience. They closed the show, dressed as jolly, fat Santas to the delight of the crowd. The name of the song was “Santa Claus Is Dancin’ Into Town” and these jolly Santas did just that. Then, several of the tapers, who are also Happy Hoofers, ran to waiting cars so the hoofers could make it to the other side of the county for the Woodbridge chapter of NARFE’s (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) annual Christmas party. The show was great fun and the audience thoroughly enjoyed it. Being in the holiday mood we stopped and enjoyed dinner together on our way home. On Friday afternoon, the Step Sisters traveled to the Woodbridge Senior Center to entertain at their Christmas luncheon. Again it was happy, well-received entertainment, and again the dancing Santas “brought down the house.”

Closed for the holidays

The center will be closed until Jan. 4, so be sure to call the office on that date to make a reservation for the New Year celebration being held Jan. 5.

Following a special luncheon at noon, one of our favorites, Norman Voss, will be entertaining us with the songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Elvis and others. There is a $3 fee (does not include lunch) for decorations and prizes.

Happy holidays

The staff and Friends of the Manassas Senior Center wish everyone a very merry holiday. The Friends of the Center are Peg Bassette, Sharon Bauer, Luis Cifuentes, Kat Cooke, Sue Gillon, Carol Nolan, Len Postman, John Rodriquez, Anna Ryman, Helen Tang, Doris Tchakirides, Lowell Thomas and Charlotte Walker.

The Manassas Senior Center is at 9320 Mosby St., Manassas. Call 703-792-6405.
