An 11-year-old Georgia girl is in critical condition after being struck by a car in Dale City Wednesday afternoon.
It happened just after 3 p.m. in the 3500 block of Forestdale Avenue, as the girl was crossing the road and was struck in the middle of the street.
She suffered severe injuries and was flown to a local hospital. She is in critical condition, Prince William police Sgt. R.W. Noble said.
Police said the car that hit her, a Pontiac Grand Am, came over a small hill and hit the child.
The driver stayed on the scene and was questioned.
No charges were filed in the crash. The investigation was ongoing, Noble said.
The girl was visiting the area with her family to attend a funeral.
They had just returned home when the crash happened, said Graciella Lopez, the child’s cousin.
Police closed the portion of the avenue where the girl was hit, as family members and concerned neighbors looked on.
“We don’t know what happened. One minute she was crossing the street and I didn’t see anything after that,” Lopez said.
It wasn’t clear if her parents were accompanying her while she was crossing the street.
Neighbors helped police direct traffic away from the crash scene.
Many said despite the fact they didn’t know the girl, they felt like they needed to help out.
“Where I come from its called common courtesy,” said William Lovejoy, of Dale City.
