Plan for the long cold walk

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With estimates of between one million and five million visitors attending the presidential inauguration, officials are urging everyone to keep their health in mind when making their plans.

"If these estimates prove accurate, Virginians planning to attend any inaugural event should be prepared to stand outside in large crowds for several hours and may encounter some delays getting home afterwards," said Dr. Karen Remley, Virginia health commissioner.

Road congestion is to be expected Tuesday along all major thoroughfares leading to Washington. Some predict that traffic backups on Interstate 95 could extend to Richmond and to Interstate 66's western terminus at Interstate 81.

Health officials urge visitors to use common sense and plan ahead. Check the weather forecast to ensure you are dressed appropriately for wintry weather.

"Wear warm, comfortable shoes because you will have to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time," Remley said.

Participants and spectators should bring with them any necessary medications because there may be delays in getting to and from events. Take alcohol-based hand sanitizers or wipes to clean your hands and have snacks or cash on hand to buy food and water, health officials advice since attendees will not be allowed to bring backpacks or coolers into inauguration areas.

With anticipated traffic backups, health officials urge visitors to be prepared to spend extended time in their vehicles, have a full tank of gas as well as food and water.

There will be about 50 first aid stations available on the National Mall and in the Capitol area for those requiring medical assistance while attending inauguration events, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Smithsonian Institution museum buildings on the National Mall will be open for people to use as warming stations. Additional federal buildings will be open along the parade route so attendees can warm up.

Remley offered the following advice:

Prepare to be outside in cold or inclement weather for many hours;

Prepare to walk long distances and stand for several hours;

Prepare to take with you the necessary medicine or food you might need if you are delayed by events or traffic for several hours.

To protect your health in large crowds and in winter weather:

Remember that in large crowds viruses spread;

Get a flu shot;

Wear layers of clothing to protect against the cold.
