No matter how we feel about Ronald Reagan, we are all in agreement that he did a won-derful thing by declaring July as National Ice Cream Month. The Manassas Senior Center will celebrate with an ice cream social immediately following lunch on Friday. For $2 you can enjoy an ice cream cone made to your specifications. Sugar-free ice cream will also be available. Sign up in the office to hold a spot to help celebrate this great American treat.
Brain Fitness
What could be better then using these hot summer days, in the air-conditioned center, engaging in some Brain Fitness? What is Brain Fitness you may ask? Well, it is a computer-based pro-gram, designed by MINDFIT, to enhance memory and brain functioning. This program, made possible through a grant from the Thornton Trust, consists of 24 sessions, each taking approxi-mately 20 minutes. It is suggested that individuals schedule two or three sessions per week.
Marianne Nigreville, of MINDFIT, will be in the center on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to noon to get the first group of five participants oriented to the program. Take advantage of this unique pro-gram by registering in the office. A fee of $20 each will allow the center to purchase additional licenses to be able to continue the program.
Testing clinic
A blood pressure clinic and glucose testing will be offered on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. There is a cost of $1 for supplies for glucose testing. It is important for seniors to have these tests done regularly.
Tai Chi
John Rodriguez is continuing his class, Tai Chi for Health, through the summer. The class is held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoons. John welcomes new participants.
Painting class
Cliff Nolan continues to offer his painting class each Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Cliff welcomes artists of all levels to join in the fun.
Solitaires meet for lunch
The Solitaires will be enjoying lunch on Thursday at Applebee's restaurant at 12:30 p.m. The Solitaires, a group of single seniors, welcome newcomers to join in the fun and camaraderie. There is a sign-up sheet on the lobby bulleting board.
Bazaar plans under way
It's not too early to start working on the annual bazaar to be held Nov. 7. An ambitious group of crafters meets each Monday at 10 a.m. and they welcome new participants. New ideas are always welcome and supplies are provided.
Chocolate basket raffle
Speaking of the bazaar -- the Happy Hoofers have decided to once again share their love of chocolate by offering their now famous Chocolate Basket in the annual bazaar raffle. It could be that chocolate is what gives them their dancing energy.
Gentle Yoga
The Tuesday morning Gentle Yoga class, taught by Susan Nowoslawski, has been suspended for the summer. The DVD "Yoga for the Rest of Us" with Peggy Chappy will be shown during the regular class time at. 11 a.m. each Tuesday. We can surprise Susan, when she returns in the fall, with how we stayed in shape.
Dancing on vacation
The popular Dance Movement and tap dance classes have been suspended for July and August. Carol and Maureen look forward to seeing everyone back and in dancing mode in Septem-ber.
Acting for Seniors
There will be an exciting new program offered this fall. Meg Kelly VanLent, a professor at Towson University, is proposing a class, Acting for Seniors.. The class will run for eight weeks and will include improvisation, performance, memorization techniques and monologues. The participants will offer a final performance at the end of the classes. Interested seniors should contact the office, 703-792-6405, so arrangements can continue.
Hoofing in July
The Happy Hoofers are working on their July programs, which start next week with a performance at the Manassas Rehabilitation and Medical Center.
