In January 2009, Olivia Lopez of Montclair auditioned for summer intensive programs at The Washington School of Ballet in D.C., the Alvin Ailey School of Performing Arts in New York and The Kirov School of Ballet in D.C. Olivia was accepted into all three summer intensive schools.
Olivia chose to participate in the Kirov School of Ballet summer session. The Kirov travels worldwide to audition and accepts only 400 students for its summer sessions. Along with Olivia, dancers from Japan, Brazil, Russia and the United States are boarding at the University of Maryland and are bused daily to the Kirov Academy for an all-day intensive program.
A rising sophomore at Forest Park High School, Olivia started dancing at age 4.
Olivia has traveled as far as China representing the United States in 2007 with Dance Etc. School of the Arts. She has also been selected to perform at the 2010 Orange Bowl half time show in Ft. Lauderdale.
Forest Park High FBLA
Recently, students from the Forest Park chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America traveled to Anaheim, Calif., for the FBLA National Leadership Conference. Competing at the national level were Victor Walden in Database Design and Alex Chamberlain in Intro to Technology Concepts. Special congratulations to Jonathan Graham, who placed third in the country in Cyber Security, and Mitchel Kelley who placed second in the nation in Networking Concepts. Also traveling with the group were chapter president Christian Bond and Alma Jackson, the FPHS FBLA Advisor.
The Forest Park Chapter was also recognized as a "Gold Seal Chapter," which is announced at the national level recognizing outstanding chapters.
Summer movie nights
Join your neighbors and friends at Dolphin Beach on Friday for the fourth movie night of the summer, featuring "Night at the Museum." The start time for this event is 8:30 p.m. Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase during the movie. Attendees will need to present a 2009/2010 MPOA recreation tag, which is available at the MPOA building Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., for admission to the movie.
MLGA
A beautiful weekend of golf for the Montclair Ladies Golf Association began with the Founder's Cup tournament. The format consisted of two consecutive days of stroke play on July 17 and 18. The total of the two rounds is combined and full handicap is deducted to determine the winner of this event. This cup is dedicated to Bernie Drohan, the first president of the MLGA and was first initiated by the MLGA in 1974.
The results of this year's tournament were: Overall winner was Carol Lucke with a low net of 133, and Bernie Drohan with a low net of 136. Prizes were awarded and a great time was had by all the ladies!
