Manassas Park council members took the advice of city staff and decided to add a “free flowing” right turn lane from eastbound Manassas Drive to southbound Mathis Avenue.
A free flowing lane has a yield sign rather than a signal.
It’s been about two years since the council first considered a turn lane at the intersection.
In 2007 the city bought properties at 101 and 103 Manassas Drive to add the free flowing right turn lane.
At the same time, the city considered a double right turn lane off Manassas Drive and commissioned a study to determine the benefits and drawbacks of putting in two turn lanes.
Two turn lanes would require signals and would also require that the city buy two more property rights-of-way, and solicit engineering and intersection improvement proposals, said Manassas Park Mayor Frank Jones.
City background documents show that two turn lanes would also eliminate a crosswalk, or require the city to install pedestrian signals if the crosswalk across two lanes remained.
Construction could begin as early as this fall after utilities relocation, Jones said.
