South Run Riding School recently held its annual fun show and potluck picnic. The weather was warm yet free of humidity, and the barn was filled with kids anxious to start the games with their favorite horses.
They started the day in Nokesville with the “Cake Walk,” in which the children rode their horses to music. When the music stopped, the pair closest to a secret spot was eliminated.
The last horse and rider left won a beautiful cake designed and made by one of the dedicated parents.
The day continued with the “Command Class,” a “Simon Says” for the riders.
It was followed by “Ride a Buck,” and the all-time favorite, “The Carrot Race.”
In the latter game, the kids had to ride their horses to the end of the ring, dismount and, with a carrot in their mouths, entice their horses and ponies back across the finish line.
Next in the lineup was “Musical Stalls” that worked similarly to musical chairs.
Horses and riders had to get to a roped-off, faux stall area before their competitors.
As the day progressed, the games continued with “Cup of Water” and the obstacle course.
“Cup of Water ” provided some relief from the heat. The kids had to ride with a cup of water, and the team with the most water remaining in their plastic cups at the end won the prize (although the horses were thrilled with the biggest spillers). It proved a nice cool splash on a warm afternoon.
The day ended with the well-known balloon toss, when the riders had the opportunity to cool off — sans horse — with water-filled balloons.
This event went from a well-organized game to a free-for-all water balloon war.
Fun was had by all, and the day ended with great food, good times and anticipation for next year’s event.
