Tanker truck fire snarls Capital Beltway commute

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — The inner loop of the Capital Beltway is shut down in the area of the Wilson Bridge after a tanker truck overturned and caught fire.

The accident at about 6:45 a.m. briefly shut down the beltway in both directions. Joan Morris, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation, says it will be "miserable" for the rest of the morning rush hour.

Cars are getting by on the left shoulder of the inner loop, going from the bridge toward Springfield. On the outer loop, going toward the bridge, only the two right lanes are open.

Morris says the fire has been put out, and things should be back to normal by afternoon.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman Dan Schmidt says one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the accident, which also involved several other vehicles.
