American Red Cross

August is typically one of the slowest times of year for blood donations, leaving many hospitals short on the blood supplies they need to treat patients in life or death situations. This year, the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region hopes to change that by offering a sweet incentive to give. All participants at any Red Cross donor center or blood drive from Aug. 1 to 31 will receive a coupon for a free pint of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. Call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543) to schedule a life-saving donation appointment. Platelet donors can call 1-800-272-2123 to schedule an appointment.

U.S. Air Force Academy

Jared David Hafich from Potomac High School, Dumfries, successfully completed Session I of the U.S. Air Force Academy Summer Seminar program for 2009. Hafich was selected from over 1,700 students world-wide to attend the program. For selection criteria, the academy uses a total person concept that is based on a student's academic achievement, athletic abilities, leadership skills, and a desire to pursue a career in the Air Force. These students have demonstrated that they have the "right stuff" for attending the academy. Summer Seminar is one of the academy's top recruiting programs.
