The Golden Girls Senior Softball Organization is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009. Founded in 1989 as a single team to travel to a tournament in Michigan, it has evolved into an organization of almost 170 members comprising a league and travelling tournament teams. It is composed of women over age 40 of very diverse backgrounds and skill levels whose common bond is a love of softball. League play occurs on Wednesday evenings and Saturday morning on fields in Vienna. Tournament teams are formed by age and these teams travel all over the United States and Canada competing in tournaments. Currently, the Golden Girls has travelling teams in the 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, and 70+ age divisions. The Golden Girls welcome new members of any skill level.
To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the Golden Girls hosted a Celebration Tournament the weekend of May 30th and 31st at the Valley View Softball Complex in Nokesville, VA. There were 16 teams in attendance from Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, and Ontario, Canada competing in 4 age brackets: 50+, combined 55+/60+, 65+, and 70+. A huge amount of effort went into making it an event to remember. Planning started in February and continued at a concentrated and sometimes frenetic pace. It was designed by softball players for softball players with an emphasis on fun, celebration, and camaraderie. The tournament received rave reviews by all in attendance both players and spectators. A host of volunteers and sponsors contributed highly to its success.
