The Virginia Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) will hold its statewide conference June 12 – 13, 2009, at the Four Points by Sheraton in Manassas.
The event is being hosted by Chapter #617 whose membership extends from Prince William County down to Fredericksburg. This is the first time in several years this event had been held in Northern Virginia.
U.S. Congressman Gerald Connolly will be among the speakers Saturday morning. The keynote speaker will be Del. Scott Lingamfelter who represents Virginia’s 31st District in Richmond. Other speakers include: Virginia Sen. Charles Colgan, Virginia Delegate Jackson Miller (50th District), Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors Corey Stewart, and Prince William County Supervisor John Jenkins.
Founded in 1978, the non-profit organization is the only national Vietnam veterans’ organization congressionally chartered and dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. Their founding principle: "Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another." To this end, VVA's goals are to promote and support the full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans.
“The issues facing our nation’s Vietnam vets range from health issues, such as the lasting effects of Agent Orange, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and high rates of suicide, to major economic problems due to the recession,” said Desi Arnaiz, President of VVA Chapter 617. “Our chapter also supports a scholarship program and works with other local veterans’ organizations in the community.”
