Prince William County school officials say a West Gate Elementary School student has a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.

Officials received information about diagnosis early Tuesday evening, according to a press release from the school system.

The child, who was not identified, is recovering at home. School officials say the student will not return to class until cleared by a doctor.

The school system is following Centers for Disease Control guidelines regarding swine flu and will not close the West Gate Elementary, which is outside Manassas. But school officials said they will "work closely with local and state health officials" to stay on top of the situation.

"This could include the future possibility that a school may need to close," the press release said.

School officials are asking parents to monitor their children for any signs of the illness, which includes fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea.

If your child is home sick for any reason, school officials urge parents to report the reason for the student's absence.
