Micron Technology honors project winners

Micron Technology Inc. recently hosted a celebratory event for 29 eighth-grade students who were this year's Micron Challenge winners.

The event included an overview of the semiconductor industry, a tour and career awareness presentations by team members: Syed Abdi, Megan Boreman, Derika Chia, Ying Du, Matt Miller, Vatsal Shah, Stephen Work, Kevin Zahedi and Melody Zhu.

Manassas Mayor Harry J. "Hal" Parrish II and Catherine P. Puttre, Prince William County Public Schools associate superintendent for middle schools, greeted and congratulated the students.

Parrish noted how important this award was in recognizing students' innovative in engineering inventions.

The challenge, a K-12 research project, was administered during the winter and spring breaks of the 2008-09 school year. The winter challenge encouraged students to build a portable optical device using provided lenses and resources found in the home. During the spring challenge, students created Rube Goldberg-type devices, using five simple machines and recyclable materials. There was a total of 600 entries.

The winners were:

n Manassas Park Middle School: Nicholas Montes de Oca and Clarence Washington.

n Marsteller Middle School: Ambica Chopra, Adam Derstine, Shannon Jewell, Rachel LaBella, Ben Lemons, Shannon Kim, Taylor Ruckle, Melissa Scavelli, Cody Trenum and Kyle Turage.

n Metz Middle School: Himani Jadeja, Sidney Lewis, Audrey McCrary and Anastasia Menyaylenko.

n Porter Traditional School: Lindsey Edward, Anthony Gibson, Joey Lithgow, Tiffany Nguyen, Kealani Rogers, Julian Sabbagh and Jewell Stockett.

n Rippon Middle School: Christopher Lindelof and Adam Nodjomian.

n Saunders Middle School: Michaela Dunow, Trevor Hansen and Audrey McCrary.

The projects were evaluated by a task force of local teachers and Micron K-12 coordinator Denyse Carroll. They evaluated the depth, creativity and conceptual framework of the students' research abilities as well as the accuracy of their projects.
