A new president and Chief Executive Officer has been named at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge.

The hospital’s foundation board of directors has appointed William H. Flannagan Jr., formerly executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer, as the new president and CEO.

He succeeds William M. Moss, who will step down July 1 after 31 years as president and CEO of Potomac Hospital Foundation and Potomac Hospital Corporation.

Flannagan joined the hospital leadership team in 1980 as vice president of professional services. In 1982 he became the vice president of operations, and in 1985, he was named executive vice president/COO responsible for all day-to-day hospital and affiliated operations. He will continue to serve in this role until a replacement is named.

Flannagan is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the American Hospital Association and the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association. He is a preceptor for The George Washington University, Department of Health Services Administration, and for the Medical College of Virginia, Department of Health Administration, which awarded him its Thomas C. Barker Outstanding Preceptor Award in 1999.

He and his wife, Beth, a teacher with Prince William County Public Schools, live in Lake Ridge.

Moss has accepted a new position as executive director of Potomac Hospital Foundation. In this capacity, he will represent the hospital and the foundation in relationships with donors, supporters and others in the community and work with other healthcare organizations that provide educational and collaborative assistance to hospitals. In addition, he will serve as an advisor and consultant to the foundation board of directors.

“There is no team more dedicated to Potomac Hospital than Bill Moss and Bill Flannagan. They have worked together for 29 years, overseen tremendous growth and change during that time, and will continue to collaborate to ensure a smooth transfer of leadership at Potomac Hospital,” said Marion Wall, chairman of the foundation board of directors. “We are profoundly grateful for Bill Moss’s service to Potomac Hospital and congratulate Bill Flannagan on his new role.”
