A local writer and illustrator has recently published a children's book about family values.
Francis the Fly makes his debut in the first children's book of a series by writer Karen R. Weaver of Haymarket and illustrator Pat Clark of Manassas.
"Be Kind, Francis the Fly" is a colorfully illustrated book for children ages 2 to 6. Kindness, a fruit of the Spirit, is used to teach this age group one of life's great lessons.
After Francis is a pest, Friar Jim tells a story about his friend Brian and how he needs a little bit of kindness to make him happy again.
Weaver, a former local pre-school teacher, has been inspired by her brother's devotion to God as a priest and her interest in teaching children.
The Rev. James Francis Edmiston was also a noted entomologist with a specialty in the study of flies.
In May 2008, Edmiston suddenly passed away. From this loss, Francis the Fly was crafted to teach young children morals and values that can be used in their lives every day.
Clark has always been sketching and creating whimsical characters on paper. Friends for years, the two decided to collaborate on the first of nine children's books on the fruit of the Spirit as stated in Galatians 5:22-23 (But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.).
The second book, "Francis the Fly Learns about Patience" will be available for sale with the year.
