Let me first state I am a resident of the 52nd District and a supporter of Luke Torian. My first issue is with your “Our View” editorial flashing in large print “An act of disrespect in the 52nd District.”
You must have your head in the sand; name one debate or candidate forum where a questioning panelist was just defeated in the primary by the candidate. I know your newspaper attends all of the
debates and local forums… who in their right mind thinks that having a defeated primary opponent questioning a candidate is fair? Why wouldn’t you question the inappropriateness and borderline
unethical format of the forum?
Why would the defeated primary opponent accept this invitation? Was no other qualified member of the community available to participate on the panel? Instead of your newspaper asking the tough
questions of the NAACP, you lashed out at the candidate who took the high road by not pointing fingers and who merely stated they could not agree on the format. This was no slight to the NAACP in my
eyes; Mr. Torian took the high road and did not attack his former opponent or the forum sponsor.
Addressing Rachel Tellis’ comments regarding John and Ernestine Jenkins supporting Luke Torian, that is how new candidates are mentored and how we bring new people into the process. When
Ms.Tellis can stack up her accomplishments and service to the community in the many ways that the Jenkins family has, then maybe someone would care about what she thinks.
I felt that this election had two hardworking and decent men running for the seat in the 52nd. Both gentlemen had stated at the Committee of 100 debate that they would continue to run a clean campaign
and talk about the issues. I’m not sure that has been the case with the Lopez campaign.
