Dear Lane Ranger,
There are several times when I must sit at the light at Va. 234 and Exeter Drive for several minutes before the light changes from red to green.
This is especially frustrating, especially when there is no approaching traffic.

Dumfries
We took your question to Jennifer McCord at the Virginia Department of Transportation and she said the signal at Exeter Drive is closely linked to others along Dumfries Road. From 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays, the signal is coordinated with five other traffic lights, from Fortuna Village Center to the northbound I-95 entrance ramp, McCord said.
There are different timings at the lights to help cars move more efficiently along Dumfries Road. The light can last longer during the rush hours but can be shorter during midday and at night, McCord said.
The critical intersections along Dumfries Road help determine the length of the timings, and other intersections may endure delays to help coordinate, she added.
Dear Lane Ranger,
Why does the traffic light at University Boulevard and Va. 234, near the new FBI office building, cycle every 30 seconds during the overnight hours when there is no traffic at or approaching the light from either direction?

Dan,
Jennifer McCord of VDOT said crews were recently repaving at this intersection. The paving has just been completed, and crews will be repainting the stop lines and pavement markings soon, if weather permits, she said. There are detectors at this intersection, and their normal operation will be restored soon, she added.
